At this year's BiblioCon from 4.6. to 7.6.2024 in Hamburg, BerlinUP will be represented with a poster on the topic "Quality assurance in institutional publishing: Reputation building strategies at Berlin Universities Publishing".
Abstract
Institutional publishing services for researchers and teachers based on scholar-led infrastructures and services are a core task for many academic libraries. As a deliberate alternative to profit-oriented, commercial scientific publishers, the interests of science are at the forefront. These include the principle of openness in the sense of open access and open research, fair and transparent cost models and a move away from exclusively quantitative indicators for assessing research quality.
In order to establish oneself in the competitive landscape of scholarly publishing, the aspects of quality assurance and reputation building play a decisive role. We would like to illustrate this using the example of the still young publishing house Berlin Universities Publishing (BerlinUP). BerlinUP is the joint university publisher of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and focuses on a publication model for books and journals that is free of charge for publishers and readers in the sense of Diamond Open Access.
The poster presents strategies for reputation building at BerlinUP that address the following aspects: Governance, value orientation, quality assurance, branding, communication, cooperation and sustainability. One focus is on the formal, technical, content-related and ethical criteria of quality assurance for scholarly publications. In addition to the presentation of our various review procedures, this also includes our criteria catalogs and checklists as well as our recently developed guidelines for dealing with artificial intelligence in academic writing and publishing.
A particular challenge for Diamond Open Access is the efficient use of resources. For this reason, the strategic orientation and further development of infrastructures and services for scientific publishing must be located within the framework of national, European and international open research initiatives from the outset. BerlinUP would like to share its experiences to date and discuss future plans as part of the poster presentation.
The poster will be in German language.
