Quality assurance
The book branch of Berlin Universities Publishing is aware of its responsibility for the quality of its publications. BerlinUP books refers to the quality standards for open access books from the working group of German-speaking university presses and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing. They form the basis for the entire quality assurance process.
As authors, editors and reviewers, the researchers of the participating institutions are commited to the DFG's guidelines for safeguarding good research practice.
To ensure that the results presented in the publications can be contextualized, traced, and reproduced, BerlinUP Books supports the authors in making the research data on which the publications are based on accessible as Open Research Data at the time of publication, if possible.
Publications published by BerlinUP Books are published open access on the repository DepositOnce and are accessible free of charge via the publisher's website. If required, a parallel print edition may be published.
The entire quality assurance process is regularly evaluated and improved.
Content
The editorial staff review submitted book proposals, if appropriate, in consultation with the series editors, and present them to the Scientific Advisory Board as well as the Board of Directors.
If the decision for inclusion in the publishing program is positive, the publisher initiates a standardised external double-blind peer review process. The anonymised manuscript is submitted to two reviewers. The reviewers follow the publisher's peer review guidelines.
Formal
Formal quality is assured through a smooth and efficient publication process following professional standards. The editorial staff will support you as authors and editors both individually and personally throughout the publication process. If we recommend external service providers, these services have been carefully preselected. All publications are subject to a thorough in-house or external technical editing quality check. Manuscripts are checked several times for formal, typographical, or formatting errors as well as for inconsistencies.
Technical
All BerlinUP books are published online on TU Berlin's repository for research data and publications, DepositOnce. The publication is in PDF/A format, suitable for long-term archiving. The file contains bookmarks and complete entries for the document properties (author, title, licence details, etc.). Each publication is assigned a DOI as a persistent identifier. For selected edited volumes, individual chapters are assigned a DOI as well.
Ethical
BerlinUP Books provides a nonprofit publishing service compliant with the principles and best practices of the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice of the participating institutions, the DFG Code, and the COPE Core Practices (2017).
Our editorial independence ensures that authors, editors, or peer reviewers will not face prejudice because of their personal characteristics or identity. Any legal or ethical concerns are taken seriously and investigated.
